It all started on a regular helicopter patrol on September 11 when our pilot spotted a huge bull elephant in the Athi River as we were heading back to base. The pilot had a feeling that something was off, so he decided to go back for a better look at the magnificent Tsavo elephant. What he found was upsetting – the elephant had its front left foot caught in a tightly fastened trap.

The pilot swiftly flew back to our Kaluku Field Headquarters to get more support and a camera. Taking photos before starting treatment is important for the vet to figure out the best way to help the animal. As the helicopter team took aerial pictures, our fixed-wing pilot went to Voi to bring Dr. Limo and the mobile veterinary team from SWT/KWS. At the same time, the K9 unit from SWT/KWS and KWS rangers hurried to the spot where the injured bull was to keep an eye on its condition.

The SWT helicopter swiftly airlifted Dr. Limo to the location where the team was waiting, providing preliminary treatment and directing them to a suitable landing area for further assistance from the ground crew.
Without prompt action, the snare would have continued to tighten around the bull’s leg, leading to severe pain and infection. Luckily, there was sufficient time for a successful rescue operation.
Dr. Limo and his skilled team managed to carefully remove the snare, treat the injury, administer antibiotics, and use healing green clay to aid in the recovery process.
